Baqueira-Beret is located in the Pyrenees, in the Aran Valley of Spain. It is the largest winter resort in Spain, extends from 1,500 to 2,510 metres in elevation and often has some of the best snow cover in Europe.
Top Things to Do
Skiing – This is likely the very reason you would go to Baqueira-Beret and who can blame you? In fact, according to a poll by The Telegraph in 2014 it is the world’s best ski resort, beating other favourites such as Chamonix (France) and Zermatt (Switzerland).
The resort has a respectable 146 kilometres of marked pistes, 7 kilometres of Nordic Track and a good range of run difficulties: 6 green, 42 blue, 39 red and 17 black. There are also more than 500 ski instructors and 26 cafes and restaurants on the mountain according to their website.
Montgarri Outdoor – If skiing isn’t really your thing, how about a excursion of a different kind? Montgarri specialise in snowmobile and husky dog sled trips in Baqueira-Beret. There are a variety of different trips available, during both day and night.
One of the most interesting options is the night excursion to Montgarri and dinner at the Amics de Montagarri mountain lodge. For €190 a person (or €90 for under 10’s) you will go on a 14km excursion on a 12-dog sled with a stop for dinner with a set menu of Lodge deli nibbles, Aranese stew, t-bone steak or duck breast fillet, dessert and wine for the adults and a special children’s menu for any under 10’s. The sled can hold 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children.
Museums – Of course, someone might want to join you for a nice holiday, but not really be interested in winter sports. Well, there are also plenty of museums around the Aran Valley for you to visit.
One such place is The Snow Museum, which opened in 2008 in Unha. The museum focuses on showing snow from different perspectives: scientific, ethnographical and sport. It also boasts interactive experiences and audiovisual elements to help make the experience even more engaging.
